Using Films and Series to Introduce the Sustainable Development Goals into the English Language Classroom
Paula Wood Borque (Universidad de Zaragoza, Spain)
Date: 14 November 2024
Abstract:
Considering that students encounter digital and multimodal texts daily, language teachers need to be aware of the ways in which they can integrate them into their practice (Kessler, 2022). A way of bringing multimodality to the forefront is through the integration of audiovisual materials such as films and television series in the language classroom (Herrero 2023). The main objective of this talk will be to explore how scenes from films and series can be used in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom to develop students' multimodal communicative competence and multiliteracies, as well as to introduce and work with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (UNESCO 2017). This session will focus on the following aspects: a) the criteria for the selection; b) how to apply a multimodal analysis to these scenes; c) how to use them in the language classroom (lesson planning). This process of selection, analysis and development of materials will be illustrated by using a scene from the film Wall-E, which can help to introduce and develop several SDGs in the classroom: Responsible consumption and production; Climate
action and Life on land.
