Sport Coaching and Development Introduction

ADAM NICHOL: Hi everyone, my name is Dr Adam Nichol and I am the programme leader for the BSc Sport Coaching and Development programme at Manchester Met University. 0:01
ADAM NICHOL: My specific research interests focus on the critical study of influence in sport coaching and I've also conducted research funded by UEFA to examine the reasons underpinning referee dropout in football. 0:11
ADAM NICHOL: Areas such as skill acquisition - how individuals learn skills and how we can use this information as individuals responsible for the development of those skills. Areas such as anatomy and physiology. 1:15
ADAM NICHOL: Other modules including understanding critically the meaning of sport. 1:30
ADAM NICHOL: Areas such as sport development policy and practice - how policy is set, enacted, and how we can critically evaluate and reflect on the impact of that policy. 1:35
ADAM NICHOL: And also areas such as developing our students' research skills so that students are able to work as practitioners in the field of sport coaching or development, or indeed beyond. 1:46ADAM NICHOL: but are able to work critically and think about becoming evidence-based or evidence-informed practitioners, who are able to research their own practice and the practice of others, and think critically about why they may be employing certain approaches. 1:58
ADAM NICHOL: One of the key benefits to our program here at Manchester Met is that we have a student-centred curriculum. 2:14ADAM NICHOL: And what this allows our students to do is over the course of their programme from year one to two and three. 2:20
ADAM NICHOL: students can select and tailor the units which they study to their own particular interests and, of course, to their own particular employment prospects, where they want to work. 2:27ADAM NICHOL: as they progress through the degree programme itself. There are opportunities to gain work experience in industry throughout the programme and also uniquely the opportunity to gain additional recognised qualifications alongside your degree programme. 2:38
ADAM NICHOL: It's an incredibly exciting time at Manchester Met currently with the vast expansion of our facilities and ever growing connections to leading organisations in industry to support and enrich your learning. 2:55
ADAM NICHOL: In terms of career prospects often our students go on to become community coaches, high performance coaches, PE teachers, sport development officers. 3:09
ADAM NICHOL: working for a national governing body, performance analysts, S&C coaches, entrepreneurs, or indeed many of our students go on to study masters programmes or PhD programmes of study as well. 3:20
