This is a recording of Professor Mark Hayter's Inaugural Professorial Lecture, titled "Sexuality and sexual health in nursing over 4 decades;
from non-existent to multi-dimensional". This took place at Brooks Building on 16 March 2022. The lecture is introduced by Professor Alison Chambers, Faculty Pro-Vice Chancellor for Health and Education. Closing words are from Professor Deborah James, Faculty Head of Research and Knowledge Exchange.
Over the last 40 years, research into sexuality within
nursing care has undertaken a substantial, transformative journey. Professor Hayter identifies 4 particular phases that mark this process in nursing and explores how
this once taboo area of human behaviour has become more recognised in nursing
care and services. Professor Hayter’s lecture illustrates this process using examples
of his own research and practice experiences from the 1980s to the present day.
Professor Hayter is a leading international nursing academic. One
of only 11 UK nurses to be inducted into the American Academy of Nursing. Professor Hayter is Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing and was recently inducted into the
Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Society International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame.
Professor Hayter is also the Editor-in Chief of the Journal of Clinical Nursing –
the largest international nursing journal in the world.
