Accessible Library Map
From Kate Woods
Welcome to the All-Saints Library at Manchester Metropolitan University. This text map is designed to help you get started in navigating your way around the Library.
Library staff are always happy to help so if you ever need any support in finding the information you need, using the Library’s resources or finding your way in the Library space then do ask us at the Help Desk.
Accessing the Library
The main entrance to the Library faces All Saints Park and you can enter either via the push revolving doors or there’s an accessible door on the righthand side, as you face the building. Before you make your way through the swipe access gates and into the foyer, you’ll find our Reception Desk and Book Returns machine a few metres away on your right. If you’re returning any books just place them one at a time on the conveyor belt and the machine will do the rest.
Staff at the Reception Desk can take bookings for the Accessible Study Room, help you lend and return one week laptop loans and are happy to answer any basic enquiries you may have about the Library.
To the right of Reception are some printer/photocopiers, Temporary day pass kiosk and just beyond is our Library Lounge where you can buy snacks and drinks and relax away from your studies. And beyond the Library Lounge are ground and first floor study rooms flagged as Library Study (Oxford Road). If you’re a wheelchair user then please use the swipe access doors at the side of the shallow steps, which carry on into the All-Saints Building, and follow the corridor round.
Back to the main entrance. Once you’re through the doors you’ll be facing our swipe access gates, just a few metres ahead. Just tap your Man Met ID card on the top of the gate to enter. The accessible entrance is through the gate on the right, closest to Reception, Just tap your card on the pad to the right. You’ll need your Man Met ID card to gain access to the Library. Without your ID card you won’t be able to access the main part of the Library.
What’s in the Library foyer?
Just beyond the swipe access gates you’ll find the Library Help Desk, a few metres away on your right. If you ever have any queries about finding books or journals or using the Library’s electronic resources then ask here. There is also an IT helpdesk situated here. We’re a friendly bunch and enjoy helping our users.
Round the right-hand corner from the Help Desk you’ll find freestanding shelves where you can collect Reserved books and DVDs and a few metres further on, the Accessible Study Room. You’ll need to have approval from Disability Support to use the Room. You can find out how the Library can provide support for those with additional needs through our website at mmu.ac.uk/library/using-the-library/disability-support. Against the wall, beyond the reserved books and DVDs you’ll find our 24-hour and 7 day laptop loans locker. To the left of this you’ll find our Self Issue Machines where you can issue our resources to your account. To the left of this we have mobile phone charging lockers if you need to give your phone a battery boost. In the left hand corner of the foyer you will find our Library Catalogues where you can search all of our resources available in the library.
Library floors and wings
Situated to the immediate left of the self-issue machines on the ground floor are a set of push double doors that lead into the North Wing. Here you’ll find study spaces, PCs, a printer/photocopier and the start of the book collection from 000 through to 339. This pattern of wings – two on each floor – housing the book collection in ascending Call Number order, combined with PCs and study spaces is repeated across the first and second floors.
As well as the main book stock the Library has a number of specialist collections, supporting particular subject areas. Ground Floor, West Wing holds the Law Reports. First floor, West holds the Exhibition Catalogues. And Second Floor, West houses the DVDs, Local Collection and Folios which are large format books too big to have on the standard shelves. Our hard copy journals collection can be found on the Second Floor, East Wing.
There’s signage throughout the building to guide you from floor to floor but if you’re not sure where anything is then do ask us at the Help Desk.
Toilet access, lifts and stairs
From the foyer you have a number of options to get to the five floors of the Library. There’s two lifts, the one nearest the Library Catalogues travels all the way to the 5th floor. The other set, which are a few metres on the left as you head towards the Ground Floor, West Wing only go as high as the 4th. There are also a set of stairs, just beyond a set of push double doors, between both sets of lifts.
As for toilets, Accessible, Men’s and Women’s can all be found on the First, Third, Fourth and Fifth floors. There are water fountains on the First, Second and Third floors where you can top up your drinks bottle.
PCs & Macs in the Library
There are 13 accessible workstations with electric height adjustable desks within All Saints Library. The desks are identifiable by a sign on the desk itself indicating that they are height adjustable. All have either standard or high-contrast screens, large font keyboards (white/black or yellow/black) and either standard or ergonomic mice.
Full details can be found at: mmu.ac.uk/library/using-the-library/disability-support.
IT areas with PCs, Macs and subject specialist software can be found on the First Floor, North Wing; First Floor, West Wing and Fifth Floor. We have 300 PCs and 22 Macs so, except for very busy periods of the academic year you should be able to find a free PC for your work. And if you have your own laptop then the 4th floor is set aside specially with socket points at each desk.
Study spaces in the Library
We operate a noise level system in the Library so if you’re wanting to study in peace and quiet then we have silent study on the 2nd floor east and 4th floors. Collaborative study, where you’re welcome to meet with your classmates and work on joint projects can be found on the Ground Floor and the First Floor East and North. The floors and wings not yet mentioned are designated as quiet study areas where you’re welcome to have brief, work-related conversations but the aim is to create a relatively quiet space for you to study in. As for the type of study spaces, the Library offers a variety of different options from study carrells, to blocks of open desks to round tables designed for a small number of students to gather round to discuss group project work. And not forgetting the soft furnishings in the Library Lounge, where you can kick back and relax.
Special Collections Museum
And the one floor we’ve yet to mention, the 3rd, houses our Special Collections Museum as well as the Education Space and the following specialist book collections: Artists’ Books, Book Design and Children’s Collection. There’s a separate Special Collections Help Desk to help you navigate their collections. Just pass through the museum space, which greets you as you enter Special Collections and you’ll find the Help Desk beyond a handle-opening door about 10 metres on the left as you enter the main space.
